- PUNHO DE MAHIN
Founded in November 2018, Punho de Mahin is a leading exponent of Afro Punk in Brazil. The band consists of four Black members, including two women and two men. Their artistic and political mission revisits a theme often neglected in the punk and underground scene: the Black experience in contemporary society. With songs that address issues such as Black protagonism, structural racism, machismo, sexism, repression of subjugated minorities, intolerance, and police violence, the band translates various social ills into a raw and incisive sound. The band's name pays homage to Luíza Mahin, a little-recognized historical figure believed to have been a princess from the Costa da Mina in Africa before being enslaved and brought to Bahia in the 19th century. A Muslim, intelligent, and articulate woman, Luíza secured her freedom and participated in historic revolts, such as the Malê Rebellion. She was also the mother of Luiz Gama, a Brazilian lawyer, poet, and abolitionist, who portrayed her as a woman who defied Christian dogmas and the impositions of slavery. The invisibility of Luíza Mahin reflects a historical reality in which the stories of Black women were often silenced, distorted, and whitewashed.
